BLM lands Colorado Whether you like the freedom of open spaces and many choices, such as what you find with the BLM lands –








National Parks camping Or the careful lay-out of the state or national parks, with their porta-potties (and sometimes even showers) and organized sites, Colorado has something for your family’s outdoor camping fun.

As I mentioned before, our family prefers the ease of BLM-land family camping Colorado.



BLM Colorado Some things we like about this style of camping include:
  • large spots for multiple tents/campers
  • flat ground for playing/cooking/relaxing
  • nice distances between camping spots (so you can’t really hear your neighbors)
  • nearness to hiking/biking trails
  • impulsive campsite availability (we’ve always found a spot, even when we leave mid-afternoon on a Friday)

    There are a few downsides to BLM-land camping, as well.

    Fall on BLM lands
  • no porta-potties (we make due with our own versions)
  • no official campsite policies (so you can get noisy neighbors)
  • popularity of various BLM areas (which attracts ATV riders, as well)

    As you can see, the beauty of BLM-land family camping might outweigh some of these disadvantages. And if you decide it’s worth it, finding that perfect spot for your family camping tents or campers will make your home away from home filled with family bonding activities.

    However, if you think your family would prefer greater organization, don’t hesitate to try some of these areas:

    Golden Gate State Park Golden Gate State Park, where we were married (right above the campgrounds, in fact) – this high-altitude area will offer its own family friendly campgrounds and experiences.






    Peaceful Valley Camping Peacefully Valley Campground, which has quite a few spots and is also close to wonderful family hikes.







    Brainard Lake Camping Brainard Lake Recreation Area with the Pawnee Campground – for sheer loveliness, you won’t find much better than this. But book early – this family friendly campground is always full weeks in advance.
