Family Photography -- Do it Together!
As a man is, so he sees.
by William Blake
Family photography is a great way to add small joys to your family adventures together. When your children (and you) look through the viewfinder, they discover a whole new world in things they might have found ordinary before.
Memories are captured through the pictures taken over the years. Not only will you know where you’ve been and what you’ve done, but you can watch your children grown in appreciation and love for nature and understanding as you flip through the various subject matters. Don't forget to keep a journal of your photos, as well.
Family photography adds to your child’s skills, as well – and learning to master new crafts is not only good for their self-confidence, but finding beauty all around them helps them understand compassion and wonder for all life. Here is our photo gallery with some of the pictures we've taken while on our family adventures together.
I think my favorite aspect of photography, however, is it’s something we can all do, regardless of age. From the time your child can hold a camera – especially a plastic, ‘kids’ camera – this is a recreational activity which can add to your family bonding.
At first, we bought our kids disposable cameras. They didn’t even care if we processed the film – they simply liked taking pictures. It was when they began to ask about the film that we decided they were ready for a digital camera. When looking for beginner digital cameras, consider everything from clarity to screen size. You might have to play around a bit before you find ones which work well for your kiddos. Ours share my old digital camera -- it has a nice optical zoom and good megapixels. The pictures look great, so they love to print them out. Butterflyphoto.com is a good place to find digital cameras online -- they offer a nice discount over in-store retail prices.
When I shop, I look for a powerful zoom and a large screen (because it makes my head ache to squint and look through the viewfinder). I also like many menu options for different photograph possibilities. My newest camera, a Nikon Coolpix P90 fits all those, and although it's not a digital SLR, I'm very happy with it!
There are many photography software programs available – I actually prefer online programs, however, such as Picnik and Picasa.
You can play with the pictures on these sites and then save the final version to your desktop. Some kids’ cameras come with simple software, as well. At this point, my kids are still more interested in the front end of photography – they’d rather I ‘play’ with their pictures and print them out. Either way you look at it, however, family photography offers ongoing adventure and fun!
