Family reading!

A book has but one voice, but it does not instruct everyone alike.
- Thomas Kempis

Reading to D I’m including a family reading section of family fun because I truly believe books can offer a completely different aspect of family recreation – and this time together can be accessed at any time. Plus, reading is a great family literacy activity during rainy days, while traveling, evenings in the wilderness, or even a daily activity.

Books promote creativity as your children read of new ideas and places. During family reading activities, parents can read the same books (or similar ones), and they can enhance that creativity and add to it.

Siblings reading together Books offer chances for discussion when parents allow their kids to read a variety of topics – and then use those topics as springboards for sharing their own ideas about life. Most books can be family-friendly books when approached in this manner. Any book can become a great book gift suggestion once we see how that book is a vehicle for family discussion.

Books open doors to greater understanding of humanity – and parents who engage their children’s interest in reading and book discussions will reap the benefits of having families which are compassionate and sharing. Family reading allows kids to learn about the world through their parents’ lenses and can also encourage greater insight and understanding.

Books are easily accessed -- most people know about Amazon, where you can find almost any book, including some which are no longer in print. Also don't hesitate to try libraries, independent bookstores, and chains like Barnes & Noble or Borders.

Daddy reading to daughter After teaching all ages and subjects (in a one-room school) for nine years, I’ve had the privilege of reading a wide variety of books. I love helping kids find books I know they’ll enjoy – and it’s even better when parents get involved and want to read, as well…however, with our busy lives today, I understand how challenging it can be to keep on your child’s reading.

Here are my book review pages, meant to help in the midst of family busy-ness (as I will try to keep up on many of the newest books). They can also offer gift book suggestions for anyone looking for age-appropriate reading material. I hope you find them valuable.

Reading is closely related to writing, and our kiddos have discovered those joys, as well. I also love to write -- and here are some books I've written which are available for a low price (as PDF downloads).

I will regularly update my book review pages as I discover new books -- and I keep up on my recent releases with diligence. If you're interested in receiving those updates in an e-zine regularly, subscribe below.
